Break Point: Elijah's Butter Fingers
22 Aug 2024 • Written By Elijah Agunbiade
Hey everyone, my name is Elijah Agunbiade, and I am thrilled to be embarking on this new journey. Originally from Nigeria, I have called Australia home for the majority of my life. I am currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science and Commerce, and I am a self-proclaimed tech enthusiast. So, you might be wondering, how did a tech nerd end up co-founding Ludis, a sustainability-focused footwear brand heavily inspired by sports?
Well, throughout high school I was known as "butter fingers" on the basketball court, due to my inability to keep a ball in my grasp. Despite my lack of athletic proficiency, my passion for sports runs deep. Whether I'm cheering from the sidelines or diving into a game myself, sport has always captivated me. My earliest memories involve family gatherings during the Australian Open, where I marvelled at legends like Serena Williams, Andy Murray, Roger Federer, and many more. Over time, my love for sports has expanded to include other global events like the Olympics, World Cup and AFCON.
Growing up, sustainability wasn't a priority in my family, so it wasn't something I was particularly mindful of. However, the more I educated myself, the more I realised how my ignorance was contributing to a much larger problem. Reflecting on my own lack of knowledge, I realised that lack of awareness is a key barrier to looking after our planet, and creating a world that we want to be a part of, including my own kids someday.
That's why, I, alongside my incredible co-founders Lili and Ryan, launched Ludis. Through Ludis, we hope to be one of the channels educating those individuals who don't understand the importance of sustainability, someone like the old me. Ludis isn't just about creating footwear; it's about fostering a movement towards a more sustainable future where the sporting industry leaves behind a greener carbon footprint.
