Game, Set, Match: How We Named Ludis

In April this year, during one of our many, many team meetings we decided it was time to give our mission a name. Something to call this sport ball waste sandal operation.
We knew we wanted something memorable and strong. A singular word, maximum 2 syllables. A name that would evoke the same effect that great brands like ‘Nike’ and ‘Veja’ achieve. A name that would have the same effect as the great musicians like ‘Adele’ and ‘Elvis’. Short and sweet, yet mighty.
We asked our trusty friend ChatGPT, who very quickly spat out numerous names, but none that felt quite right. For instance, ‘GameFeet’ – although memorable, just wasn’t quite hitting the spot. Halfway during the meeting, I excused myself to go to the bathroom. On my return, I was immediately met with excited faces. “Yo Lili, I think we got a name. What do you think about…”
“Ludis?”
Ludis. Short. Sweet. 2 syllables. Tick, tick, tick. Sounds cool I thought, but what does it mean? Turns out, Elijah had jumped on to Google Translate and started translating English words that represented our mission into other languages. Shoes, sustainable, active, community. Eventually, he tried translating sport into Latin, and there it was. Ludis. Elijah had brought a dying language back to life, which is fitting given that we were trying to do exactly that - bring dead sport balls back to life. Sounds like I should leave our meetings more often.
